We've all heard the recommendation to visit the dentist every six months for a checkup and cleaning. While this general rule serves as a great baseline for many, modern dentistry recognizes that oral health needs vary widely from person to person. What works for one individual might be insufficient for another.
The Canadian Dental Association emphasizes that the frequency of dental visits should be tailored to each patient's specific risk factors. A dental exam involves assessing your gums, checking for decay, examining oral tissues for signs of disease, and professional scaling to remove plaque and tartar (calculus) that brushing and flossing cannot reach.
For patients with excellent oral hygiene, low cavity rates, and healthy gums, a visit once or twice a year may be perfectly adequate. However, certain factors increase your risk of dental problems. Smoking, pregnancy, diabetes, dry mouth (often caused by medications), and genetic tendencies toward gum disease all necessitate more frequent monitoring.
If you are prone to forming tartar quickly or show early signs of gingivitis, your hygienist may recommend a recall schedule of every 3 to 4 months. These frequent cleanings prevent early-stage gum disease from developing into periodontitis — an irreversible condition that damages the bone supporting your teeth and is linked to overall health complications.
At Grace Dental Centre, we don't believe in one-size-fits-all treatments. During your hygiene appointment, we evaluate your oral health, discuss your lifestyle and medical history, and establish a cleaning schedule that keeps your teeth and gums in optimal condition. Regular preventative care is the most cost-effective way to avoid major dental work down the road.
